Get Active Outdoors

Many young people here have never seen the coast or spent a day in the San Gabriel Mountains. The reason is usually cost and transportation, not interest. Get Active Outdoors removes both barriers.

Get Active Outdoors is a free program for young people in El Monte and South El Monte. Over 12 months, we are hosting 54 outdoor activities for youth ages 12 to 26. Transportation, entrance fees, food, and supplies are all covered.

What we do

Community bike rides: Youth-guided rides on protected Class 1 bikeways to El Bosque, Santa Fe Dam, and the Emerald Necklace.

Mountains-to-Sea rides: Longer rides from the San Gabriel Mountains to Long Beach.

Full-day transit tours: Guided trips by public transit to San Clemente, Long Beach, Ventura County, and Santa Monica.

Full-day field trips: Visits to natural and cultural places around California.

Paid opportunities for youth

Get Active Outdoors also creates paid roles for young people. We will offer paid internships for youth ages 14 to 18 on our Youth Advisory Committee. Interns commit to 12 working hours and attend five of six meetings.

About the funding

Funding provided by the Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act (Proposition 64) for the Youth Community Access Grant Program.

Get Active Outdoors: Another community access project through the California Natural Resources Agency to improve youth access to natural and cultural resources.

The program is part of Outdoors for All, a statewide effort to expand park and outdoor access in the communities that need them most.

Together we’ll be transforming a barren field into a vibrant native garden and outdoor education center. The land will become a refuge for both humans and wildlife. We'll be creating walking paths, gathering spaces, an outdoor classroom, and nature play zones. It is also an earth-healing landscape; providing shade, water and carbon capture, and biodiversity protection.
