The Royal Oak Greening Project is a collaborative initiative between the City of Covina and Charter Oak Unified School District. It aims to enhance the school grounds by introducing drought-tolerant landscaping. This project represents an important effort to merge educational goals with environmental sustainability, fostering ecological benefits and community engagement.
The project focuses on tree planting, bioswales, outdoor learning spaces, and shaded areas for students and staff. By adding native plant gardens and biodiversity improvements, it helps manage stormwater while creating a more inviting school environment. Running through November 2027, the project is supported by a CalFIRE grant and designed with input from both school and community stakeholders.
As the project progresses, it will contribute to the well-being of students and the surrounding neighborhood by offering green spaces that enhance the urban tree canopy and provide a cooling effect during hot weather. Educational signage and fitness areas are planned to encourage physical activity and environmental awareness, making this project a model for future school greening efforts.
