El Monte BLOOMS is a year-long community project about the plants, animals, and insects that share this city with us. BLOOMS stands for Biodiversity and Life Outdoors through Ongoing Mutual Stewardship.

Biodiversity is a big word for something simple. It is the variety of living things in a place. In El Monte, that looks like monarchs stopping by on their migration, red-tailed hawks over the river, and California poppies bringing bees to the yard.

Much of what we do happens at Peck Road Water Conservation Park, along the San Gabriel River. But biodiversity is not only at the park. It is in your front yard, the median on your street, your kid's schoolyard, and the alley behind the corner store. Part of this project is helping all of us notice it.

Neighbors of all ages are welcome. Come on a walking tour, join a community bike ride, or drop in on a workshop. You know this city. We would love to hear what you have noticed.

ActiveSGV is part of this project with the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Funding is made possible through the State of California, Wildlife Conservation Board.

Together we’ll be transforming a barren field into a vibrant native garden and outdoor education center. The land will become a refuge for both humans and wildlife. We'll be creating walking paths, gathering spaces, an outdoor classroom, and nature play zones. It is also an earth-healing landscape; providing shade, water and carbon capture, and biodiversity protection.
