Meet Alina Hernandez, who works on the Climate Team at ActiveSGV, bringing a focused commitment to community engagement and environmental initiatives. She’s contributed to projects like the Santa Anita Ave Complete Streets Project, gathering community input to help expand bike paths, and the Public Works Equity in Infrastructure Project, which seeks to address the unique needs of underserved communities. Alina also managed social media and communications for some time for the Office of Community Partnerships and Strategic Communications (OCPSC), creating organic posts that shared valuable resources with the SGV community. At ActiveSGV, Alina wears many hats—you might find her canvassing, tabling, or stepping in wherever she's needed. She’s a team player and an invaluable part of our work.
Alina also serves as the Chair of the Parks Commission for the City of Rosemead. Learn more about her perspective in her own words below!
How did you get started working at ActiveSGV? I started working at ActiveSGV after being introduced to the organization at the Jeff Seymour Family Center. I was working at the Conservation Corps when I saw this decked-out van, and my friend Alex and I were interested in learning more, so we followed ActiveSGV on Instagram. From there, I started learning about the work and also saw an opportunity for an internship, which is how I started. Here I am, a little over a year later!
What do you like most about ActiveSGV? I like that everyone here shares many of the same interests and values, which makes it a really enjoyable workspace. Collaborating with my coworkers on projects that benefit our community is a dream, and sometimes, I don't even feel like I’m working because I'm enjoying it so much. I’m glad to be here and get to work on aligning my goals and dreams with the organization.
Favorite and memorable ActiveSGV experience: That’s tough to choose. Being part of ArroyoFest was super special, I had never experienced anything like that before. I also had a lot of fun at our work retreat where we got to camp alongside the beach in Carpenteria!
If a friend from out of town were to visit, which place in the SGV would you take them to and why? I would take them on a picnic to Whittier Narrows to watch the ducks for sure! I’ve always enjoyed doing that, it’s very therapeutic to me. Also, take them on a hike in the San Gabriel Mountains. Food-wise, I would take them to the Blossom Market Hall and enjoy some yummy food and matcha!
What are you currently listening to, reading, watching, or digging? I am currently reading “Purified” by Peter Annin and watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy (extended edition).
