In our latest episode of ActiveLab, we discuss Alhambra’s potential for transformation. Our guest, Je-show Yang, a Program Manager of the Sustainable SGV program at APIFM and a long-time Alhambra resident, shares his insights on the exciting developments in active transportation within the community.
Alhambra is on the cusp of a significant shift. The city adopted a local active transportation plan for the first time—an initiative long awaited but eagerly anticipated. The new plan outlines the development of a network of dedicated bikeways and pedestrian infrastructure, as well as the City’s first public bike parking. In 2021, ActiveSGV worked with residents and Council Members Adele Andrade Stadler and Sasha Rene Perez to install a temporary bike lane, high-visibility crosswalks, and curb extensions along Poplar Blvd. The two-week demonstration project was met with enthusiasm by residents and requests for permanent safety improvements.
The need for these changes is clear. Alhambra suffers from a high rate of collisions involving people walking and bicycling. Je-show emphasizes the urgency of implementing plans to create safer streets and a more interconnected city. The slow pace of implementation has been a frustration, but with continued community outreach by organizations like APIFM, residents are becoming vocal supporters of these initiatives.
One of the key goals is to establish a comprehensive network from the outset, connecting significant destinations with protected bike lanes. This network will allow more residents to cycle, thereby reducing car dependency. Additionally, there's a strong community push for traffic calming measures around parks and schools to ensure the safety of pedestrians, particularly children and older adults. Another benefit of active transportation highlighted by Je-show is its positive impact on student’s academic performance and behavior. Providing green, accessible routes to schools can significantly enhance students' daily lives. Je-show stresses the importance of community involvement in making these plans a reality. Resident input is crucial in tailoring solutions that meet the unique needs of Alhambra’s neighborhoods.
