January 2025 brought unforeseen challenges to the San Gabriel Valley. While we began the year with a reprising of familiar programming, including a wonderful E-asy Access ride to the Whittier Narrows Nature Center, our focus quickly shifted when the devastating Eaton Fires swept through our region. This disaster was a stark reminder of the increasing climate threats our communities face, from wildfires and destructive winds to the long-term risks of debris, pollution, and the arduous recovery process. Our hearts are with those who have lost their homes, been displaced, or experienced job loss due to this disaster.
At ActiveSGV, our mission is rooted in building healthy, equitable, and sustainable communities. We believe everyone deserves to live in a safe and healthy environment, and that's why we're committed to building climate resilience and fighting for environmental justice. The Eaton Fires underscored the urgency of this work. The fires have left a significant mark on our region, impacting the San Gabriel Mountains, local trails we cherish, and the homes and lives of our neighbors and colleagues. The road to recovery will be long and challenging, but the outpouring of support we witnessed in the wake of this disaster underscores the resilience and strength of our community.
In the immediate aftermath of the fires, we partnered with the City of El Monte School District and the Jeff Seymour Family Center to launch a donation drive to support those directly affected. The outpouring of support from our community was truly inspiring. Donations poured in. For every shipment of supplies we sent out, even more arrived, demonstrating the incredible generosity and compassion that defines the San Gabriel Valley. Over three days, our team worked tirelessly to distribute these vital resources directly to families in need and to additional donation sites closer to Pasadena and Altadena. We saw firsthand the power of community solidarity in the face of adversity.
We extend our deepest condolences to those affected by the fires and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to supporting their recovery. We are immensely grateful to everyone who has contributed to the relief efforts, from the tireless volunteers to the generous donors. Your compassion and support make our work possible.
To assist those impacted by the fires during this difficult time, we have compiled a list of resources categorized below, including shelter information, family care services, food assistance, and other essential support. We encourage everyone to utilize these resources and to continue supporting their neighbors as we navigate this challenging period together.
