Noche de las Luminarias: Celebrating the San Gabriel Valley's Changemakers and Shining Stars

Get ready for a night of inspiration and celebration as ActiveSGV hosts its annual Noche de las Luminarias on September 12th, 2024, from 6 PM to 9 PM at the picturesque Grapevine Arbor in San Gabriel, CA. This special event brings together community members, leaders, and advocates who are dedicated to building a more sustainable, safe, and vibrant San Gabriel Valley.

Honoring the 2024 Awardees

This year, Noche de las Luminarias will shine a spotlight on the following exceptional individuals and organizations:

  • Outstanding Volunteer - Brian Velez Memorial Award: Grace Santiago. A dedicated counselor and longtime Boyle Heights resident, Grace's volunteer work with ActiveSGV spans from supporting open streets events to educating the public about sustainability. Her passion for the community and willingness to contribute make her a deserving recipient of this award.
  • Outstanding Local Advocate: Je-Show Yang. A program manager at the Asian Pacific Islander Forward Movement (APIFM), Je-Show is a tireless advocate for improving air quality and public health in the San Gabriel Valley. His work has included organizing against car-centric projects and advocating for increased green spaces and safer streets.
  • Outstanding SGV Business: Beastin Beauties Fitness Studio. Located in El Monte, this studio is dedicated to empowering and inspiring women through fun and dynamic workouts.  Founded in 2015, Beastin Beauties provides a supportive and inclusive environment for women of all fitness levels.
  • Outstanding City Staff: Steven Mateer. As the Transportation Manager for the City of Glendora, Steven has overseen a wide array of innovative transportation planning, design, and infrastructure projects. His leadership has helped Glendora secure millions of dollars in funding for sustainable transportation initiatives.
  • Outstanding City: City of Alhambra. The City of Alhambra has made rapid progress in advancing sustainable planning and community development, prioritizing community engagement and fostering partnerships to create a healthier, more active city.
  • Outstanding Elected Official: Jeffrey Koji Maloney. Chief Counsel for the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and an Alhambra City Councilmember, Jeff has championed efforts to establish the city's first bicycle and pedestrian safety plan, comprehensive sustainability plan, and historic preservation ordinance.
  • Outstanding Community Organization: Trust for Public Land (TPL). Since 1972, TPL has been creating parks and protecting land to ensure everyone has access to the outdoors. Their work bridges the park equity gap and enhances community resilience against climate impacts.
  • Outstanding SGV Project: Merced Avenue Linear Park. Completed by the City of El Monte, this park enhances community life by increasing safety, accessibility, and leisure opportunities. Its design incorporates green spaces, recreational paths, and community-focused amenities.
