Je-Show Yang, a program manager at the Asian Pacific Islander Forward Movement (APIFM) and our Outstanding Local Advocate for this year's Noche de las Luminarias, is a passionate advocate for improving air quality and public health in the San Gabriel Valley. Je-show immigrated to the United States from Taiwan at the age of eight with his mother and younger brother. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Florida with a B.A. in Political Science and Economics and a minor in Chinese. After moving to southern California, Je-Show served as a Coro Fellow in Public Affairs. His dedication to community service and environmental sustainability has been evident throughout his career.
Over the past five years Je-Show has facilitated collaborations with students, parents, community members, elected officials, and other key stakeholders to confront pressing environmental justice issues. This work has included organizing against outdated, car-centric projects, such as the proposed widening of I-10 and local roads, to protect residents' health and livelihoods. In Monterey Park, Je-Show’s efforts to educate and empower residents about opaque City plans to widen Garvey and Atlantic Boulevards to six vehicle lanes resulted in public outcry and the eventual shelving of a dangerously misguided proposal. Je-Show’s current projects focus on increasing green spaces, trees/shade, and safer, more multi-modal streets in Alhambra and other west SGV communities, further enhancing environmental quality and public health in the community.
In his free time, Je-Show champions sustainable practices and green initiatives as a member of the Alhambra Environmental Sustainability Commission, enhancing community awareness and spurring positive changes. His work as a community leader and local public health advocate has touched the lives of countless residents, and inspired nontraditional voices to get active in local civic affairs.
We are delighted to be honoring Je-show and other inspiring leaders from the San Gabriel Valley at our Noche de las Luminarias event in September. Tickets to Noche are currently SOLD OUT. However, if you would like to support ActiveSGV's mission, we encourage you to consider making a donation through our donation page. Your contribution will be greatly appreciated!
