The City of Alhambra, this year's honoree for Outstanding City, is rapidly emerging as a model for sustainable planning and community development in the San Gabriel Valley. Over the past five years, the city has implemented a series of innovative initiatives, including hosting successful open streets events, adopting its first active transportation plan, implementing a groundbreaking "Skip the Stuff" ordinance to reduce single-use plastic waste, and embarking on the development of its first Environmental Sustainability Plan.
The city has prioritized involving residents who have traditionally been excluded from civic decision-making processes. Through various creative approaches, such as 'Sustainable Alhambra' pop-ups at public spaces, community walks/rides, focus groups, stakeholder meetings, and temporary demonstration projects, Alhambra's planning model is inclusive and accessible, paving the way for a healthier and more active community. Elected officials, city staff, and community groups have forged new partnerships to advance shared priorities. This strong collaboration on sustainability and health initiatives has already yielded impressive results, with millions in new funding secured for a new community center and active transportation improvements.
As we honor Alhambra at this year's Noche de las Luminarias, we are reminded that progress is always possible when communities embrace sustainable planning and prioritize the voices of their residents. By working together and thinking creatively, cities like Alhambra can forge a vibrant and healthy future for their citizens and future generations.
