Empowering Youth: How ActiveSGV is Sparking Change Through Action and Leadership

Youth Participatory Action & Research, or YPAR, is a way for young people to take an active role in improving their communities. ActiveSGV has embraced this approach to engaging local youth in meaningful projects. Through the YPAR model, youth identify challenges in their neighborhoods and work toward real solutions. It’s not just about learning; it’s about taking action and making an impact.

This summer, four South El Monte youths participated in the Active Transportation Youth Fellowship Program, led by ActiveSGV, where they took on leadership roles in improving local infrastructure. Over five weeks, they learned about transportation safety, collected data, and developed ideas to make streets safer and more accessible. Instead of only sitting in classrooms, they were out in the community—on bikes, walking local streets, and seeing firsthand how infrastructure affects pedestrians, cyclists, and people with all mobility needs.

Participants engaged in a guided tour with Metro staff.

One of the highlights was the Bike Rodeo, where participants practiced bike safety skills. They also took walking tours in Pasadena and Santa Monica, guided by Metro, to see how other cities have successfully built infrastructure that supports walking, biking, and public transit. Back in South El Monte, the fellows conducted walk audits on Merced Avenue, identifying areas where improvements could be made to make the streets safer for everyone.

The fellowship wrapped up with a graduation ceremony at the Jeff Seymour Family Center, celebrating the hard work of the young leaders. They gained skills in data collection, analysis, and advocacy that will help them continue to contribute to their community in the future.

ActiveSGV played a key role in organizing and supporting this program, funded by the CalFresh Healthy Living program through the Los Angeles Department of Public Health (LACDPH). Between 2024-2025, ActiveSGV will continue the program with 6 new youth and work alongside the City of South El Monte to support its infrastructure goals and engage youth in making lasting improvements.
