ActiveSGV Named Inaugural LA28 Resilience Champions Fund Grantee

Funding will transform over 11,000 square feet of unused school campus space into a climate-resilient community cooling space in El Monte ahead of the 2028 Games

El Monte, CA (May 26, 2026) — ActiveSGV today announced it has been selected as a recipient of the inaugural LA28 Resilience Champions Fund, an initiative from the LA28 Organizing Committee that invests in local nonprofit organizations in the region committed to building a more resilient Los Angeles for generations to come.

As part of the first cohort of Resilience Champions, ActiveSGV will advance the Jeff Seymour Family Center Community Cooling Project by installing native shade trees, natural seating, play features, and water-capture elements to reduce extreme heat and expand access to green space in one of the most park-deficient neighborhoods in California. The project supports LA28's broader focus on three priority areas: wildfire resilience and nature restoration, ocean protection, and cooling solutions. These efforts will address the environmental challenges facing Angelenos, particularly in communities most impacted by extreme heat, wildfire risk, and environmental degradation.

"The San Gabriel Valley faces some of the most severe heat and park equity challenges in the region. This funding lets us do what we do best, which is to work alongside communities to build solutions that last long after the grant period ends," said Wesley Reutimann, Deputy Director, ActiveSGV.

"Resilience is built in communities and sustained through collective action," said Reynold Hoover, LA28 Chief Executive Officer. "Through the LA28 Resilience Champions Fund, we're investing in local organizations leading solutions rooted in community, driven by ingenuity, and designed to protect the future of Los Angeles."

LA28 collaborated with Community Partners and an advisory group of local experts to select the award recipients, ensuring decisions were grounded in community need and local expertise. The advisory group is made up of leaders representing the public, academic, nonprofit, and philanthropic sectors.
