ActiveLab - Episode Six: Connecting Communities to the Coast with Go Coastal

Live from the Amtrak train, with stunning views of the beach, host Carly and guest Gaby discuss Go Coastal, a program facilitated by ActiveSGV in partnership with the California Coastal Conservancy!

Though millions of residents and tourists visit California’s beaches annually, many face significant barriers to accessing our state’s cooler coastal areas. The existing transportation options exacerbate inequalities for residents of the San Gabriel Valley without cars. These communities, some of which are among the most park-poor and heat-burdened in LA County, face significant challenges in accessing cooler coastal areas due to limited awareness of public transit routes and lengthy travel times. The Go Coastal project seeks to bridge this gap, making trips to the coast accessible via public or active transportation like train and bike rides.

Funded by the California Coastal Conservancy, recent Go Coastal events have demonstrated the feasibility and benefits of using public transportation to enjoy Southern California’s beaches, providing participants with lasting knowledge and experiences. The program featured two main components: a bike-focused event series and a transit-centered event series. It also included educational components in which ActiveSGV partnered with local organizations to teach participants about local water systems and the importance of water and coastal conservation.

While the most recent series of Go Coastal events concluded in 2023, ActiveSGV hopes similar multi-modal events will be possible in the coming years!
